i am summer for mangoes
So even though I am not much of a summer lover in terms of the weather, I AM a summer lover in terms of the food.
Grilling.
Ice Tea.
Fresh Fruit.
Sign me up.
I do love some summer food!
One of my favorite things to make in the summer is mango salsa. I typically serve it over grilled chicken or fish but feel free to grab a tortilla chip and go to town. Oooooh or make fish tacos.
Plus it super easy and pretty.
Now who doesn’t like pretty food?
Summer Mango Salsa
- 1 ripe mango, peeled, pitted and diced (about 1 1/2 cups)
- 1/2 – 1 tomato, diced
- 1/2 medium red onion, finely chopped
- 1 jalapeno pepper, minced
- 3 Tbsp. fresh cilantro leaves, chopped
- 3 Tbsp. fresh lime juice
- Salt and Pepper to taste
Combine all of the ingredients in a bowl. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Optional add-ins include avocado, cucumber, or jicama.
So tasty. I basically keep it stocked in the fridge all summer long for me and Keith to eat. That and fruit salsa. The two summer staples of the Bruneman household.
See? I am not a total summer Scrooge.
Do you have any summer staples?
m.o.n.d.a.y.
Heeeeeey.
How was your weekend? Mine was good. A little crazy but good.
Notables:
- We were dog sitting my Dad’s dog all weekend and it was fun but a little exhausting have 2 active dog’s running around the house.
- I found coffee-flavored protein powder. Seriously. It’s amazing.
- I watched the Track and Field Olympic Trails. <——best part of the weekend right there!
- We registered Bella for her first puppy manners class! 🙂
- I met up with an old friend I hadn’t seen in a while and had a great time!
- I only showered once. Oops. It happens. Evidence here (greasy hair mess…ha!)
- I cleaned out my closet and got rid of tons of stuff! It felt so good.
- I ordered a new pair of my favorite running shoes. K-Swiss K-Ona. Truth: I have reordered the same shoe and the same color 4 times in a row now. I just love them so much!
- Keith and I had a midnight collision in which we ran into another passing to and from the bathroom. His tooth collided with my head. There were tears and blood. Lots of blood. Why do minor head injuries bleed so much?
- We finally hit triple digits in ATX. Lovely. Although I shouldn’t be complaining since we had already had 15+ days of triple digits by this time last year.
- If you want more Bella cuteness along with random glimpses into my life…check me out on Instagram. My name is ultra original: KellyBruneman. Ha!
What was notable about your weekend?
summer
Okay so I am not a huge summer fan. And total side rant but who decided that the first day of summer was June 20th? That person does not live in Austin because I am pretty sure we’ve been in summer since (oh you know) March!
Now when I was a kid I loved summer.
Like looooooooved summer.
Summer meant the pool and no school and the pool.
But as an adult I find that summer brings about worries and hates that as a kid I didn’t have.
Things like: my electric bill goes through the roof (I am in Texas AKA Hell) and it gets ridiculously hot with no break for months on end. There is nothing I like less than spending money on electricity. Ick.
Things like: how IÂ sweat through the shower. I get so hot (because of the humidity in the air) during my morning workouts that I sweat while I am taking a shower. And don’t even get me started on blow drying my hair. RIDICULOUS.
Things like:Â how it takes me until I just about get to my destination before my car finally cools down. Never buy a black car when you live in the South. Trust me.
Things like: burn bans because of what they imply.
Things like: how it never rains here and we get put on water rations. I am allowed to water twice a week if I am lucky and somehow my yard is supposed to survive? Really?
But on the rare occasion that it does rain I will inevitably be on my morning walk with Bella when it starts pouring.

But truth be told…I loved every drop of that rain. We haven’t seen rain in months and it was a welcome gift. Even if I got soaked and Bella (who has never been in rain before) was so confused as to where it was coming from. She kept looking up at the sky and then at me with what I can only imagine as a “What the heck is that?” look! It was a puppy first! 🙂
Does anyone notice a trend here? I hate summer because I hate the weather! Was it really this hot when I was a kid? How did I not notice? Or is it because I am just older and more things are directly affected by the temperature that I notice how dang hot it is?!
Sheesh.
Fall…when is fall?
Are you a summer lover?
blast from the past
Thank you so much. All the comments on the blog, facebook, and instagram were really encouraging and I basically felt like everyone was just giving me permission to feel how I needed to feel. I also want to thank the people who emailed me with tips and suggestions on how to handle my anger as well as the ones offering words of support or empathy. I had a really good day yesterday. I also feel very encouraged. I am going to try some of your recommendations on how to handle this. While I know it isn’t over by any means, at least I can feel like I am proactively doing something versus just letting it overpower me.
It can be more exhausting to try to be someone you’re not or to feel a way you don’t than to just be you. So thank you for letting me be me. I think what I like the most about blogging is the insight people have to offer, the advice they have to give and the support they are willing to lend. I know that I am going to have bad days but if I can have one good day a week than that is progress and then maybe 2 or 3 and so on. Baby steps.
So thank you. Because I feel like I have lifted a weight off my shoulders and I feel, at this moment, encouraged and hopeful. I should bookmark this post for the days when I feel helpless.
Okay…moving on. That was probably enough mush for one blog post. Heh.
So I was randomly going through old emails and found one from Keith in 2004. It contained this picture:

I can’t believe that is us 8 years ago! Ha! To me, we look like babies. Upon reading the email that this was attached to I realized this was the first weekend I had gone to Dallas to see Keith! We did the long distance thing for a year and half and this was the first of MANY road trip weekends back and forth between Austin and Dallas.
I look at this picture I remember being so excited to be with Keith! For those of you who don’t know our story…here’s the quickie version. Keith’s family and my family are friends and so I have known Keith my entire life. Keith is 11 years older than I am and I developed the biggest monster crush on him when I was 15 years old. Seriously. I thought he was such a hunk! ha! (love that word) And to finally be dating Keith Bruneman was like a “somebody pinch me I must be dreaming” moment. We got married when I was 25…ten years after my first crush started. How’s that for a happy ending? 🙂 So this is a special picture because it really was the beginning.
I am so glad I found it!
It is also crazy to think about how much has changed since that picture was taken! WOW. I mean for such a short amount of time so much has happened to us. We definitely are not those same people in that picture. But I like to think for all the good and bad we are now better versions of those people. Let’s hope! 🙂
Do you have a romantic love story? Please share! I am such a sucker for those things!
