a hairy issue

August 18, 2011

You know what? I hate cleaning.

Hate it.

You do too? Awesome. We should never be roommates.

Cleaning just seems like this incredibly daunting task. I feel like my house is mocking me.

All. The. Time.

So imagine my (and Keith’s) surprise yesterday when I cleaned. Not only did I scrub, mop, and polish but I did it to the one room that mocks me the loudest. Any guesses?

The Bathroom. OUR MASTER bathroom to be exact.

I hear your groans. I know. The worst room ever! Why is it that a bathroom, the one room, that has more soap per square inch of any other room is always the dirtiest? I swear grime just collects around facets, soap scum sticks to the shower and water droplets seek our the mirror. I swear it.

But the real problem is the hair. Oh my hair. I am not sure how I am not bald. The amount of dark brown hair that falls from my head every single day would be enough to make small rugs. You think I am exaggerating? Me? Never.

I know. I know. Every so often I can inflate the truth.

Not this time. Ask Keith. It is a problem. A big hairy problem. A problem that Keith feels is not his since he is not responsible. A problem that I am supposed to clean up. And let’s be honest…that doesn’t happen very often.

Until yesterday.

I am such a good wife.

Now excuse me while I go shower in the guest bathroom. What? I am not messing up my hard work. Just be sure to call ahead before you come stay with me.

Please tell me I am not the only one with this problem!

the little things

Do you ever think the way we communicate is funny? We don’t ever hang out in person, go to the movies, gossip over dinner. Yet it seems that on blogs we tend to share and spill some of our most personal secrets and struggles. I think it is because maybe deep down we all need some validation or support. We write it out to expel it from our insides and then get emotional support from people who may have gone through what we have. Plus although we may read each other blogs’ daily there is still a certain level of anonymity to it. Maybe this why blogging has become so popular and more mainstream in recent years. It allows people to show different sides of themselves without fear of direct judgment. I mean I can’t see your face as you read the sentences. I can’t know you true gut reaction. I only see the comments (99.9% of which are positive reinforcers) and are only what you choose to tell me.

There also seems to be a bit of vanity to blogging, no? I am not offering up any great life shattering advice here, yet I blog about my life as if someone else would find it interesting. I haven’t found the cure to cancer, invented the magical diet pill, or stumbled upon the latest discovery to change man-kind. I simply sit down every evening and write. I don’t think too much into it. I sit down, look at the computer and let my fingers start moving. And when I hit publish every morning I expect some sort of reaction via page views or comments. I expect us to communicate based on what I have said.

But let’s pretend we are real life friends. That tonight we are going out. We will dress up and order drinks. We will laugh about our day and tell each other the little things that add personality and character to our lives. The little things that we don’t often share on the blog. The little mundane things that never seem important by themselves by that add up to what makes our lives ours. Like stubbing your toe in the middle of the night, forgetting to turn off your sprinklers, or beating the expert level of Minesweeper in record time. Sometimes I think it is the little things that repeated over and over are what start to symbolize who we are.

So here are 10 quirky little things that never get shared but make me me:

  1. I have to sleep on my stomach facing the right side of the room.
  2. I can not stand to have someone touch me under my neck. I have an instant knee jerk reaction to it.
  3. I don’t drink alcohol except on rare occasions.
  4. I don’t wear matching bra and panties….ever.
  5. When I don’t know the words to a song I make them up as I go along. <—-Keith finds this extremely entertaining
  6. I don’t like to lose. At anything.
  7. I can’t take naps unless I am sick.
  8. When I order coffee from Starbucks, I ask for 1/2 coffee and 1/2 hot water. I like my coffee so weak that Keith calls it one step above dirty water. Whatev.
  9. I almost cried when Keith told me we weren’t getting the NFL Ticket this year.
  10. I have a really bad habit of looking at myself whenever I pass a window or a mirror.
Those are 10 little things. Little things that don’t get said here but are reflective of who I am, maybe even more so than the bigger struggles I face. Sometimes a bad or a good day is just a cumulation of a lot of little things. It is the little things, the details, that get lost in transit when blogging.

Give me a few little things that make you, you!

do you ever

August 16, 2011

Do you ever wonder…

  • why 9:00am-12:00pm seems to go much faster then 12:00-4:00pm?
  • why coffee always sounds good with breakfast food but not with dinner food?
  • why women cry more than men do?
  • why food tastes better when eaten off pretty dishes?
  • why the New England Patriots are always good? Every. single. year.
  • why unloading the dishwasher is such a pain in the ass even though it really doesn’t take long to do?
  • why when kids play sports today they don’t keep score?
  • why red dye #40 is banned in Europe but perfectly acceptable in the US?
  • why it costs more for me to fly to NYC than it would for me to fly to Cancun?
  • why I can’t get pregnant even though I am trying like a rabbit? ha!
  • why my husband can eat 5,000 calories a day and still lose weight?
  • why guys like boobs so much?
  • why jeans with holes in them cost more than jeans that not ripped up?
  • why people actually think they will find their soulmate on The Bachelor/The Bachelorette?
  • why some people like Tom Cruise?
  • why Whole Foods is so proud of their products?
  • why peanut allergies are so much more common today than 20 years ago when I was a kid?
  • why anyone can have children but to adpot a child takes an entire investigation into your personal and financial life?
  • why twitter and facebook are so addicting?
  • why you always want what you don’t have until you get it?

You don’t wonder about any of this? Huh. It must just be me.

one man’s trash is another man’s treasure…er woman

August 15, 2011

Last week I tweeted about how much I loved ebay because I always find things for cheap! Nicole tweeted back suggesting I do a post on it. So here it is. What I got and why I love it!

First, I am not grossed out by second hand clothing. I always wash it when I get it and I don’t ever buy intimate items like bathing suits, panties, bras or even workout shorts. Those all seem a little too personal to me…but to each their own. But I like my clothes already a little broken in. Is that weird? I am assuming not due to how successful ebay and second hand stores have become. I must be totally normal! ha!

I got this GAP skirt for $7.99

I got this GAP skirt for $6.99

I got this Anthropologie skirt for $9.99

I know that was a lot of skirts but they are great for work with wedges and a top or great for play with a tank top and flip flops. Plus I spent, $36, after shipping for THREE skirts. I couldn’t have purchased one new one from either of those store for $36. So it makes me happy. Cheap clothes = win for Kelly! My other favorite thing to buy off ebay is jeans! There is nothing better than a pair of already broken in jeans. That is love right there! 😉

But just as with anything else I have found a few tricks for ebay. I mean you are still spending money and no matter how good of a deal something is, you shouldn’t just waste money. So first, make sure you know your size! I know what size I wear at GAP so I know what size to look for. I know these skirts will fit me because I know GAP and how GAP clothes fit. When I shop on ebay I usually tend to seek out brands that I absolutely know my size in and know exactly how it fits. I am not likely to bid on an item of clothing from a store I haven’t ever shopped in before and therefore have no idea what that store’s sizing scale is.

Next, if you find something you like from one seller look at what else they are selling. Most of the time if you buy multiple items from the same seller they give you a discount on shipping, as an incentive. I bought both of those GAP skirts from the same seller and she had a deal going on with shipping. If you buy more than one item from her then shipping for the second item was only $1.50. Score. I’ll take it.

Lastly, look at the seller’s ebay rating. Typically I don’t usually bid on anything if the seller has less than a 95% rating. I usually like the 98-99% ratings better. This rating is based on upon other buyers rating the product and service that the seller provided. That, to me, is important. I want the confidence that when I bid on an item it is likely to be as described and shipped timely. And I always take the time to rate the seller. If the products arrives with 6-10 days and it as described I always go back and rate my experience. I figure since I appreciate the rating so much I might as well do my part to continue to the cycle.

There it is…my ebay plan of attack! 😉

Do you ever shop on ebay?
