five books

I am a big reader. Big. I saw on the Daily Post the topic of the five books that have influenced you the most. I thought this will be easy but honestly, narrowing it down to five books was tough! But I think I did it.

In no particular order:

1. To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee

This book is probably my all time favorite book. I think it is an important book for every child to read at some point in school growing up. It is written through the eyes of a child living in the deep South when black and whites were still living in segregation. It is a deeply touching novel that has lessons we can all still learn today.

2. Where The Sidewalk Ends, Shel Silverstein

This is a childhood book that is a series of short poems. I loved this book when I was a kid. I would read it over and over and try to memorize the funny poems. This book taught me to love reading and to use my imagination.

3. Izzy-Willy-Nilly, Cynthia Voight

I read this book in middle school and it haunted me for years. So much so that almost 17 years later I still remember it. It is about a high school girl who gets in a car with an upperclassman boy after he’s been drinking. They get into an accident and she loses her leg. It is a heartbreaking story about a little girl finding herself.

4. Bel Canto, Ann Paget

This book is about a group of terrorists who hold high executives and people of high political standing hostage. It explores how the terrorists and hostages cope with living in a house together for several months. Many of the characters form unbreakable bonds of friendship, while some fall in love. It is a really interesting book that captivated me from the very beginning.

5.  The Faith Club, Ranya Idliby, Suzanne Oliver and Priscilla Warner

After September 11th, Ranya Idliby, an American Muslim of Palestinian descent,  faced constant questions about Islam, God, and death from her children, the only Muslims in their classrooms. Inspired by a story about Muhammad, Ranya reached out to two mothers, one Jewish and one Christian, to try to understand and answer those questions for her  children. After just a few meetings, however, it became clear that the women
themselves needed an honest and open environment where they could admit—and  discuss—their concerns, stereotypes, and misunderstandings about one another. This book is amazing and will open your eyes to three beautiful religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

What is one book that has influenced you?

one year; one sentence

September 29, 2011

I saw a while back on the Daily Post this blog topic: For each year you have been alive, write a single sentence about the most important thing that happened to you that year. I thought that might be kind of fun to do. This really makes you think!!

1981: I was born.

1982: I moved to Austin, Texas from Dallas, Texas.

1983: McDonald’s introduces the McNugget <—-so google totally helped me out on this one. I was 2…I don’t remember anything when I was 2.

1984: My brother, Josh, was born.

1985: Super Mario Brothers makes it’s debut

1986: I started kindergarten at Northwest Elementary and my teacher was Ms. Kelly.

1987: I wanted to be Samantha on Who’s The Boss.

1988: We spent one week every summer on  Galveston Island <—some of my favorite childhood memories!

1989: My Pappaw died. (My mom’s daddy!) 😦

1990: I experienced my first crush on the Zach Morris from Saved By The Bell.

1991: I started reading Ann M. Martin’s The Baby-Sitters Club books. I had all of them. I wish wish wish I would have saved those books!

1992: I watched Shannon Miller win silver in the 1992 Summer Olympics and forever sealed my love of watching gymnastics.

1993: I started at Westview Middle School and had lockers for the first time.

1994: I had encephalitis and meningitis at the same time.

1995: I had my Bat Miztvah and my Torah portion was the Ten Commandments.

1996: I ran in the 5A State Track meet on the 4×400 relay team as a freshman.

1997: I placed third in the 4×400 relay at the AAU Junior Olympics.

1998: I got my first car! A 1997 Nissan Sentra. (I still remember the license plate!)

1999: I graduated from Pflugerville High School.

2000: Y2K….remember how freaked out everyone was?

2001: September 11, 2011 will be a day I will never forget.

2002: This was the final season of Felicity (best show ever).

2003: I graduated from Texas A&M University.

2004: I got my first [real adult] job.

2005: I got engaged to my best friend.

Wow…that was a good week! Thank you to everyone who helped me and wrote guests posts for me. You guys rock!!

Now about that London trip. I am going to start by saying that I am not one of those bloggers who breaks down her vacation day by day and draws out the recap over several posts. It just aint me…because honestly you weren’t there so do you really want to read multiple posts about my vacation? Exactly. So let’s hit the highlights.

First, the trip was amazing and London is an awesome city. I would venture to say that I could totally live there (assuming I could get used to the tiny flats they live in…wow). But everyone was so nice and helpful and it was just a lovely city.

So first here are some pictures from all the famous destinations in London. Everything took my breath away!

WestMinister Abbey

Big Ben with The London Eye in the background

Kensington Palace

Standing outside the Tower of London

Buckingham Palace

Harrods (of course!)

Notting Hill

My two favorite things we did were see a musical, Billy Elliot. AMAZING!

And shopping at the outdoor Portobello Market in Notting Hill!

Plus figuring out the underground subway system (the tube) was fun. Remember, I live in Texas, we don’t have public transportation like that!

We also visited a slew of museums! We did the Vicotria Albert, the British Museum, the Tate Modern and the Tower of London where we got to see the Crown Jewels (no pictures were allowed though!)

At the British Museum we got to see the already designed 2012 London Summer Olympic Games gold medals on display! That was very cool!

And I got to hold the Olympic Torch at Madam T’s Wax Museum…ahahah!

The other hard part was that everyone drives on the other side of the road. So crossing the street was confusing at times because I didn’t know which way to look! Thankfully those Brits got it figured out!

Overall the trip was amazing. It was the best 30th birthday present my mom could have ever given me (don’t freak out my birthday was in April…you didn’t miss it! haha) and I honestly can’t wait to go back with Keith one day!
