disgusted

February 2, 2012

On January 31, 2012 the Susan G. Komen Foundation, a longtime supporter of Planned Parenthood by way of grants for mammograms and breast cancer screenings, primarily for low-income women, pulled their funding and cut ties with the largest women’s’ health organization in the US.

This is shameful. I am so disgusted by this announcement that I don’t even know where to begin. First off, I am a huge believer and supporter of Planned Parenthood. Unfortunately the name “Planned Parenthood” has become synonymous with the word “abortion.”  And while Planned Parenthood does perform abortions is does so much more for the communities it serves.

They provide family planning in the way of condoms and birth control. They provide yearly annual exams for women without health insurance. They provide breast ultrasounds, mammograms and breast checks. Something like 200,000 women use Planned Parenthood for mammograms and breast exams and now because the Susan G. Komen foundation is cutting ties and therefore no longer sending funds these women will suffer. Why Why Why would an organization determined to help eradicate breast cancer stop helping an organization that offers these valuable and potentially life saving services to women?

This just stinks all around. Is this really about finding a cure? Is the way to do that by cutting off funding, thereby isolating thousands upon thousands of women requiring Planned Parenthood’s services?

I am so so so disappointed and the “powers that be” at Susan G. Komen you should be ashamed of yourself!

What do you think about this?

Since this is a potentially sensitive topic please be respectful in the comment section. Thanks!

bachelor talk

February 1, 2012

**I am going to be talking about The Bachelor and while I don’t think I am giving anything away for those who haven’t seen this week’s episode I wanted to give fair warning.**

Who is watching The Bachelor? I am not ashamed to admit that I definitely am. And so is Keith. We watch it together. I am sure he not to pleased that I just shared that little nugget of information about him on the internet. 😉

Anyway…Ben, The Bachelor.

First let’s talk about Courtney. She is this season’s drama queen and boy is she DRAMA. She is crazy although she does have some good one liners. Like when talking about Blakely, “who knew strippers could play baseball?” Best line ever.  I have to wonder if Ben really does choose her, he has to be horrified seeing this footage right now. Right? And can I just say the skinny dipping in the complete nude with her was tacky. I lost what little respect I did have for Ben in that minute.

I happen to really like Kasie B. She seems like she is down to earth and above all the girl drama for now. She seems confident and her Tennessee accent is cute!

Nicki drives me crazy. I know I need to support my Texas girl but eh…she doesn’t do it for me. Each week she gets a rose I am surprised.

And Ms. VIP Cocktail Waitress, Blakely. Sorry no. Just no.

And did everyone hear that Emily is going to be the new bachelorette??! Is anyone surprised by this? I was! I now think she is in it just for the publicity. Especially since she kept an online blog and dairy during Ashley’s season giving her “expert opinion”….please that girl is all about fame.

Oh well. The Bachelor/Bachelorette are so fun because they are all such train wrecks. I mean really…you are going to date a guy along with 15 other women, find a connection, fall in love, get engaged in 8 weeks on national television. Riiiiiight.

But I still watch anyway!

bookclub

January 31, 2012

Tonight is my book club. I am so excited because I loved the book we read this month.

We read The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom.

Synopsis: When a white servant girl violates the order of plantation society, she unleashes a tragedy that exposes the worst and best in the people she has come to call her family.

Orphaned while onboard ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavinia arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house. Under the care of Belle, the master’s illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded to her adopted family, though she is set apart from them by her white skin.

Eventually, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, where the master is absent and the mistress battles opium addiction. Lavinia finds herself perilously straddling two very different worlds. When she is forced to make a choice, loyalties are brought into question, dangerous truths are laid bare, and lives are put at risk.

My Opinion: This book was amazing. I couldn’t put it down and the pages flew by. It is such a rich story about family, love, loyalty and  loss. It isn’t an easy read at points and I found myself aching for the characters. You won’t be disappointed. I urge you to read it.
