Tonight is my book club. I am so excited because I loved the book we read this month.
We read The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom.
Synopsis: When a white servant girl violates the order of plantation society, she unleashes a tragedy that exposes the worst and best in the people she has come to call her family.
Orphaned while onboard ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavinia arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house. Under the care of Belle, the master’s illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded to her adopted family, though she is set apart from them by her white skin.
Eventually, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, where the master is absent and the mistress battles opium addiction. Lavinia finds herself perilously straddling two very different worlds. When she is forced to make a choice, loyalties are brought into question, dangerous truths are laid bare, and lives are put at risk.
My Opinion: This book was amazing. I couldn’t put it down and the pages flew by. It is such a rich story about family, love, loyalty and loss. It isn’t an easy read at points and I found myself aching for the characters. You won’t be disappointed. I urge you to read it.
I’ll have to check it out. I need a new book to read. I finished my last one a few weeks ago.
This sounds great! I will definitely add it to my book list for 2012! Thanks for reviewing it!
Sounds like a really good book. I’ll have to add it to my list.
Sounds intriguing and different!
Another one to add to my list!
I’ve never heard of this one! Thanks for mentioning it!
How did you find your book club? I joined one once and it wasn’t very nice… I’d love to join a good one!
Mine is awesome!! It is just a group of women I met in a neighborhood bootcamp.
I really liked this book. It’s the kind that sticks with you for awhile. I read it after reading The Help and they were good partner books.
