some records should not be broken

Records, one would argue, are only set to be broken. Athletes set records and others scramble to break them. We set personal records and strive to surpass them. In fact, we have a record for almost everything. I went to the Guinness World Record website and found that we have records for:

  • Hot Dog Eating
  • Largest Group Shower
  • Largest Wine Flute
  • Largest Collection of Film Projectors
  • Fastest Time to Pack a Suitcase
  • 24 Hour Treadmill Running
  • Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Leprechaun’s

You can’t make this stuff up people.

But now let’s talk about a record better left unbroken.

In 1925 Austin, Texas hit a record for having 69 days of over 100 degree heat.

And today, my friends, August 24, 2011 we are breaking that record. Today is day 70 of over 100 degree heat this year.

I am not amused.

Not. At. All.

Humor me, tell me what the temperature is where you live.

Or more importantly, do you have a guest room?

UGH! That’s so miserable! When I lived in Phoenix we broke a couple of heat records and I vowed to never live in a place where it was normal to see 118 degrees.

I know! This isn’t normal. We usually probably have 10-15 days of over 100 degree heat in a year. But 70 days!! And there is no end in sight. Today we broke the record by 1 day but when it is all said and done we are going to end up SMASHING that record.

Dressed as leprechauns? hahaha oh man!

I’m sorry to hear about the heat–ick! That is so unbearable! Our temps have been in the low 80s lately….not bad!

Our second bedroom is an office since most of our friends and family live nearby.

84, no humidity, and yes. πŸ˜‰ Hope the heat breaks for you soon!

We are busting records over here in Phoenix too 😦 114s and 116s… I feel your pain, but I probably deserve it more since I knew what I was signing up for!

  5. August 24, 2011 8:11 am

Geez…. talk about consistent! We’ve been the exact opposite! 100 one day… 75 the next… 90 the next… clearly my commitment issues are also reflected what kind of climate I live in.

  6. August 24, 2011 8:16 am

Haha – it’s been really nice here lately – 60s in the morning and cool 70s and 80s during the day. I definitely can’t complain!

We live in a lofted apartment so we technically have a guest “loft” – does the trick though πŸ™‚

    • August 24, 2011 5:59 pm

I’ll take a guest loft especially since I see what you make for breakfast every morning!

  7. August 24, 2011 8:19 am

Kelly that sucks — and yes we have a guest room πŸ™‚ It has been 80s all week!

  8. August 24, 2011 8:23 am

SEVENTY!!!!!!! Not 17…moses. I don’t know how or if I could handle that. Wow.

Yuck! That’s terrible 😦 it’s 71 now & will be a high of 84. You can definitely cone stay here!

Okay I agree with you BUT don’t you think it would be worse to have this miserable of a year and not break the record? I feel like I want some credit for surviving this year! HA! I just looked at my weather app – high on Friday and Saturday of 108. SHOOT. ME. NOW.

    • August 24, 2011 9:46 am

That is true…108…I am going to start crying.

  11. August 24, 2011 9:29 am

ohh my goshhhh that is crazy.. so glad I live up north where it snows in like… august. kidding.. kinda. But really… it’s 70 degrees in upstate ny right now and I’m loving it!

  12. August 24, 2011 9:47 am

DC humidity disappeared this week, so it’s been surprisingly comfortable. 85 during the day 65 at night. But then we break records for random first earthquake on the east coast, and hurricane irene coming at us by Friday night… so i think i’ll choose the heat! honestly though i grew up in upstate NY where sunny/warm days were few and far between, so i love every minute of the heat, and am not missing the cold just yet!

  13. August 24, 2011 10:53 am

It’s going to hit 95 in ATL but the humidity is a killer. We have fans and no guest room in our loft so it gets pretty toasty. So ready for Fall.

  14. August 24, 2011 12:06 pm

Hah, the group shower….I bet that was interesting πŸ˜‰

It’s about 80 here today..partly sunny and windy…chances of storms later. Not bad. And yep, gotta a guest room πŸ™‚

  15. August 24, 2011 12:35 pm

uggggh to that record and you are welcome to stay in our guest room as the ocean breeze keeps things nice and cool πŸ™‚

  16. August 24, 2011 6:53 pm

Damn! That’s soooooooooo long being that hot! Ew. I heard that Texas is having some businesses not doing so well because of the drought. That’s not not not good.

It’s about 95-99 in my neck of the woods this week. No humidity though. Sorry!

  17. August 24, 2011 8:36 pm

Uh, we have a guest room, but I’m thinking San Antonio isn’t going to be much different. πŸ™‚

I’m so very tired of the heat.

  18. August 25, 2011 6:54 pm

I miss the rain!!! wahhhh. who ever thought i would?! It sprinkled for like a minute today when my coworker and i went out to get lunch, and i totally freaked out with excitement πŸ™‚ Shocking?!?! I didn’t think so.
