an apple a day…

June 9, 2011

I love apples! I eat one every day and usually two. So when Keith suggested making apple chips in the dehydrator I was more than game. These make the perfect snack and Keith and I are gobbling them like crazy!!

Cinnamon Apple Chips

6 apples of choice (I used pink ladies)

1 tbsp. lemon juice

1 cup water

cinnamon

Peel the apples, if desired. Cut the core out, using the apple corer or a knife.

Slice the apples into thin rings about 1/4 inch thick.

Add  lemon juice to water in a large, shallow bowl. Dip the apple slices into the water and lemon. This will prevent the apples from turning brown. Pat the excess moisture from the apple rings with paper towels.

Lay the apple slices in a single layer in your food dehydrator, according to the manufacturer’s directions.

Sprinkle the cinnamon on top of the apple rings. Dehydrate the apple rings for 8 to 10 hours at 135 degrees F, or until they are crispy.

Green apples are too tart for me. But I like them baked in apple pie! haha…does that count?

I love apple chips! My parents used to buy them for my brother and I when we were little. These sound awesome.

I love apple chips, too. They remind me of fall. I’m a huge apple-eater, though never more so than fall, when I can get apples from the orchard. I love tart red apples and the grocery store NEVER carries those. No offense, Gala and Pink Lady.

These look delicious! I wonder if baking them in the oven would work too?

Oh yeah…you could bake them. It would just need to be on a low heat…like 150 or 200 and then you would need to do it for like 2 or 4 hours. Checking and turning them every 30 minutes or so.

My gandpa LOVES his dehydrator and making apple chips! These look SO good! I really want to get a dehydrator! Have you ever tried making sun dried tomatoes?

    • June 9, 2011 3:20 pm

That is next on my list! We are going to use the tomatoes in our garden and make them this weekend! I can’t wait!

I concur about sun-dried (errr dehydrator-dried, I guess) tomatoes. They are great in there. I’ve dehydrated almost everything i can think of, but never apples. I’m just not that into them. Strawberries are really good too!

Using my dehydrator to make dried fruit is seriously one of my favorite things to do. It may take a while, but they are SO worth it! I also make my baby nephew homemade fruit rollups since he is addicted to those things!

I like dried apples in oatmeal with cinnamon. Neat – you have a dehydrator? Are they “worth” it? I don’t think i’d use it often enough – but the concept seems neat!

We are actually borrowing it from a friend. I am not sure if it is worth it. I mean it takes a long time and then the result goess REALLY fast! But we make homemade beef jerky in it and that is awesome.
