the hunger games
I finished The Hunger Games trilogy.
I realize most of you have read them so please indulge me with your opinions because I plan to indulge you with mine.
If I ranked the books in order of how much I liked them then it would follow exactly the order they were written. I loved the first book! It was dynamic and interesting and then I thought the series got progressively weaker and lacked any original idea(s) that weren’t already explored in book one. But the entire idea of the hunger games was so impressive and so new…that’s why I think book 1 stole the show.
I didn’t particularity love how the series ended either. I am not sure exactly how I would have wanted it to end. I felt like the author tried really hard t give us everything all tied up in a neat little package with a bow and it just fell flat. I am super interested in those who have read it to tell me their opinions about the ending.
As for Katniss herself. She was obviously a bad ass but I sometimes got a little annoyed with how she believed that every bad thing that happened to anyone in Panem was her fault. That “it’s all my fault…I don’t deserve to be happy” attitude got on my nerves. Hence why I didn’t like the ending because I felt like even at the end she put others’ happiness above her own and never really got what she wanted. But I did love that she was one tough cookie. She was fierce!
I think my three favorite characters were Gale, Finnick and Cinna. I could have done without Peeta. He bugged me every single step of the way. Seriously. But overall I really did like the series. It was a fast read and like I said book 1 was AMAZING!
What did you think of Katniss? Peeta?
Who was you favorite character?
Did you like the ending?
I’m still halfway through Mockingjay, but I definitely agree with you that the first book was by far the best. This last one is sort of annoying. I want to see what happens, but I don’t really understand how why Katniss always has to dress up in her Mockingjay outfit to be the symbol of the revolution.
YES! Your review on the book was just like mine and I totally agree with you. Except all my commentors said they didn’t like Gale and were on team Peeta so I felt like a total minority on that one! I am completely team Gale. Peeta was a nice boy, but too weak for bad-ass Katniss, she wore the pants in that relationship, while Gale protected her like a man should. 🙂
I agree with you that I didn’t like Katniss, she was a complainer. I thought it was the worst in the second book, and then she got better in the 3rd. But I agree with you on the favorite characters.
I also hated how in the last book, she spent 75% of it describing every detail of the war and then totally skimped on wrapping it up. It was like she was late for a deadline and summed it all up in a paragraph!! After teasing us with the love triangle for 3 books, that was not cool!
Can’t wait for the movie!!!!
I HATED how book 3 ended and book 1 was my favorite also. The entire ending of the series felt rushed to me, like she was trying too hard to wrap up the story. Still can’t wait for the movie next month though.
I haven’t read them!! I guess I need to, if only for the first book 🙂
I think I’m probably the one left that hasn’t read these books yet.
I definitely think the first book was the strongest, but I loved them all. I thought there was definitely some repetition between each book that got a little old, but I also thought there were unique elements there as well. I was totally Team Peeta the whole way. I don’t think she needed a bad-A like Gale because she was bad-A herself. She needed someone soft because she did have a tendency to blame herself. I agree that the ending was rushed, but overall I was happy with the way it wrapped up. It’s too hard to put my thoughts into a blog comment – ugh!
I could not put these books down. I LOVED the first one… definitely my favorite of the series. I was also on team Gale, I thought Peeta was nice but too weak for Katniss. I got Reaaaaally mad at the second books story line- like I almost stopped reading. I had to put the book down and leave it for a while but I had to keep reading because I wanted to know what happened. I also think the books got a bit weaker as they went on and the ending wasn’t quite what I had imagined but I’m not sure how else I would of wrapped it up myself so I guess I can’t complain. So excited for the movies though!
I LOVED the books, to the point that when I finished Mockingjay I was really depressed. The characters had become so real that I felt a loss when the series was done (yes, I am a major LOSER). I was captivated by The Hunger Games it drew me in, I would agree that Mockingjay ended abruptly, it almost felt like she was writing a Hollywood ending. It didn’t seem to honor the characters and their personalities. That being said, they trilogy ranks among my most favorite books ever and I can’t wait to see the movie!
totally agree that book 1 was the best and the ending left a lot to be desired. I actually did want her to end up with Peeta, but I feel like the way they ended up together was lame. Like “oh, I guess I just marry him…” I would have rather seen her end up alone and not just “Settle” which was so uncharacteristic of her.
Exactly!!!!
I have a feeling I will be like you with the books. I still can’t wait to get my hands on the next two though!
LOVE the books…but I do agree. The last one was hard for me to get through. I absolutely flew through the first…and then my reading speed kind of decreased.
I cannot wait for the movie, I think it will be really good.(of course the books are always better though!)
I think it’s so funny what you think about Peeta..b/c I think the SAME thing! I haven’t found anyone that agrees with me though. He seemed to be SO needy..not like a manly man that could help Katniss..he more hindered her.
Favorite character: Gale too. Loved him. He was just awesome. Kind of thought Katniss & gale would end up together.
