to crust or not to crust

February 10, 2012

When you were a kid, did your mom cut off the crusts of your sandwich bread as she smeared thick layers of peanut butter and jelly inside?

My didn’t.

Because this girl loved her some crust. And I still do!

Totally embarrassing confession but, it is not super uncommon for Keith to go get 2 pieces of bread to make a sandwich (from the bag) and find them crustless.

Crusts are excellent dipping vessels for almond butter and hummus for me. Kind of like carrot or celery stick but way more fun.

So my brilliant idea? I think companies (especially Udi’s…since they’re obviously reading! ha) should start packaging and selling bags of crusts. Keith had to stifle a laugh when I told him this. He doesn’t think it will take off.

He’s totally wrong.

So mom, to my delight (and Keith’ horror) thank you for never cutting off my crusts.

Are you a crust person?

Would you buy a bag of just the bread crusts?

I’m a crust lover, especially on homemade or bakery bread. Now you would think I would be raising a crust lover too, but nope…my daughter HATES crusts. I try, I “forget” to cut off the crust on her sandwhich but she takes them off. I love making her a pb & j on a chewy whole grain bread. I smear it all to the very ends knowing that I don’t really need to because I’m going to cut them off but it’s my little treat…you know, anything you eat on the crust has no calories!

I always eat the crust but I don’t think I would buy a bag full of them!

I’ve never been a crust fan, but my parents would never cut them off my sandwiches because it was wasteful, and my dad always said all the nutrients were in the crust. So I guess that’s why I always eat it first. I like to get it out of the way so I can enjoy the good stuff.

I’m iffy on crusts–I guess it depends on the bread!

I love crust! Funny story in my family…my mom has really thin hair and my hair is super thick. My grandma said that my mom never used to eat her crusts and she would rip them off and hide them, unlike me, who always ate them. She says that’s why our hair is so different…apparently, crust is good for you and makes your hair thick. 🙂

Yes and YES! I love crust! My fiance hates it. It’s the BEST part of bread! And I don’t even love bread, but I’ll eat it for the crust for sure!

I like crusts except for that top crust. It’s harder than the other 3 sides of the crust. I usually feed that top crust to my dog. 🙂
