what my vacation taught me

June 1, 2011

I went on a vacation to Arizona and the Grand Canyon with two bloggers, Katie and Lori, last week. I learned a lot on this trip. A lot.

  • when flying Southwest the emergency exit row is the place to sit
  • the Grand Canyon is beautiful and magical
  • camping would have been about 100% better with s’mores
  • the only other person I would want to share a 2 person tent with aside from my husband is definitely Lori
  • finding the bathroom in the middle of the night in pitch black isn’t easy and getting lost might happen
  • when hiking, you need to drink more than 8oz of water on your way down to make the way up not feel like agony
  • meeting random hikers who sing to you helps makes the ascent better
  • always trust your gut instincts
  • i don’t like trekking poles
  • powdered hummus isn’t half bad (i won’t be offended if you just trust me on this one)
  • after showering and hiking for 8 straight hours red wine makes all the aches go away
  • your butt will hurt for at least 3 days after climbing straight up
  • those cute hiking packs weigh a ton and aren’t nearly as cute when you finish
  • you will miss your husband a lot and hearing his voice on the phone might make you tear up
  • this is the best protein bar ever
  • there are rattlesnakes in the Canyon
  • raw vegan desserts aren’t worth $6.99 but they ARE worth $1.99
  • staying up late and whispering like you’re in middle school never gets old
  • people surprise you
  • things are not always what they seem
  • i love staying in hotels, especially in phoenix, especially with Lori, especially on my last night of vacation
  • i still have the ability to make an impression on people
  • there is nothing like sleeping in your own bed
  • and finally….i missed him:

What is the best thing, to you, about coming home from vacation?

The best part for me is coming home to my dog. He just acts so happy to see me! That is, of course, if I’m on vacation with Lee. If I’m alone, then the best part would be coming home to see him! 🙂

I love coming home, changing the sheets on the bed, taking a shower and then crawling into bed. I just love that.

I’m glad you had such a nice vacation!

Aaaahhh, I love traveling but I love that instant feeling of comfort and safety when you walk through your front door. I don’t do well with transitions from being away to being home, but I do love the feeling of newness and then the security of home.

I’m so happy that your trip went wonderfully, Kell!! You are so beautiful.

I love staying in hotels too! hehe. Sounds like you had a fabulous trip!

I love hotels and room service!!! Ah…it’s the little things in life!

Because Im such a nerd, my favorite thing about coming home is the super excited puppy that greets me at the door. 🙂

Sounds like a great trip, minus the rattlesnakes, of course. And I’m just going to take your word that powdered hummus is great. No need to try that out for myself… 🙂

I agree that finding the bathroom in the dark is crazy! haha so scary. I’m so glad you had a fun time! I guess one thing I love is that I have a little more control over what I eat and stuff, when I come back home. And of course, it’s always sooo nice and even more easy to appreciate my family 😀

I love coming home to my husband when I’m away. I’m a big mush pot like you for him…we actually are spending the weekend away this weekend and I’m already thinking about seeing him again…haha glad to see I’m not alone!

You learned a lot! Especially the fact that s’mores are a MUST while camping. You better be prepared next time! 😉

Awww… sounds like you had such a great time! I’m jealous! Both of the sites and the peeps!

My favorite part about coming home is getting to sleep in my own bed again. As comfy as hotel beds can be, I love my own room. 🙂

awww, it’s so clear what love you two have for one another. So wonderful to see! 🙂

I love seeing my little furry ones, I so missed them over the holiday while we were sailing with my in laws. Fortunately my mom was her lovely self and took care of them so I knew they would be okay 🙂

    Hope you’re having a great week! 🙂

Yes, I’m all about the emergency exit row on Southwest…us long legged girls need to put them somewhere. Glad you had fun, learned a lot, and are reunited with the hubby! 🙂

OMG I’m cracking up! Everything is 110% correct (and hilarious).

Organic Food Bars = chalky protein powder goodness = YUM
Finding the camp bathrooms in the middle of the night is hard. Finding the tent after is harder.
    We’re princesses. Happily.
Mr. Bear and Mr. Bayer are cuties.
Pita Jungle needs WAY more locations.
Beer and good company in the middle of the day is key. And de-stressing.
Lori needs to come visit Austin. And Kelly.

hahaha! Loved it!! Everything on this list was perfect!!! Especially the last one!

My own bed (and pillow), my own foods, my husband and my kids – not necessarily in that order. 🙂 Oh, and my computer.

Glad you had a nice trip.
