the little things

Do you ever think the way we communicate is funny? We don’t ever hang out in person, go to the movies, gossip over dinner. Yet it seems that on blogs we tend to share and spill some of our most personal secrets and struggles. I think it is because maybe deep down we all need some validation or support. We write it out to expel it from our insides and then get emotional support from people who may have gone through what we have. Plus although we may read each other blogs’ daily there is still a certain level of anonymity to it. Maybe this why blogging has become so popular and more mainstream in recent years. It allows people to show different sides of themselves without fear of direct judgment. I mean I can’t see your face as you read the sentences. I can’t know you true gut reaction. I only see the comments (99.9% of which are positive reinforcers) and are only what you choose to tell me.

There also seems to be a bit of vanity to blogging, no? I am not offering up any great life shattering advice here, yet I blog about my life as if someone else would find it interesting. I haven’t found the cure to cancer, invented the magical diet pill, or stumbled upon the latest discovery to change man-kind. I simply sit down every evening and write. I don’t think too much into it. I sit down, look at the computer and let my fingers start moving. And when I hit publish every morning I expect some sort of reaction via page views or comments. I expect us to communicate based on what I have said.

But let’s pretend we are real life friends. That tonight we are going out. We will dress up and order drinks. We will laugh about our day and tell each other the little things that add personality and character to our lives. The little things that we don’t often share on the blog. The little mundane things that never seem important by themselves by that add up to what makes our lives ours. Like stubbing your toe in the middle of the night, forgetting to turn off your sprinklers, or beating the expert level of Minesweeper in record time. Sometimes I think it is the little things that repeated over and over are what start to symbolize who we are.

So here are 10 quirky little things that never get shared but make me me:

  1. I have to sleep on my stomach facing the right side of the room.
  2. I can not stand to have someone touch me under my neck. I have an instant knee jerk reaction to it.
  3. I don’t drink alcohol except on rare occasions.
  4. I don’t wear matching bra and panties….ever.
  5. When I don’t know the words to a song I make them up as I go along. <—-Keith finds this extremely entertaining
  6. I don’t like to lose. At anything.
  7. I can’t take naps unless I am sick.
  8. When I order coffee from Starbucks, I ask for 1/2 coffee and 1/2 hot water. I like my coffee so weak that Keith calls it one step above dirty water. Whatev.
  9. I almost cried when Keith told me we weren’t getting the NFL Ticket this year.
  10. I have a really bad habit of looking at myself whenever I pass a window or a mirror.
Those are 10 little things. Little things that don’t get said here but are reflective of who I am, maybe even more so than the bigger struggles I face. Sometimes a bad or a good day is just a cumulation of a lot of little things. It is the little things, the details, that get lost in transit when blogging.

Give me a few little things that make you, you!

It is so funny. It’s also funny how I think of other bloggers throughout the day when something happens, like they are my real life friends. You and I have so much in common, but I especially love how are careers are passing, like you said yesterday. I also sleep on my stomach, but face the left side of the room. So bad for my neck!
    I love “knowing” you!

Reading your posts make me feel more normal. I certainly have all my little quirks as well. The way I sleep, my ability to take naps (LONG ones), my Starbucks order…all of that is a long winded way of saying I HEAR YA LADY! 😉

#2 and #10? Totally guilty!! In high school, it was a big joke for people to try and touch my neck and watch me freak out!

I also look at myself when I walk by a window or mirror, my sister calls me out for it every time. Here’s something weird about me, I’m super OCD when it comes to color coding notes/calenders. In high school it was absurd, every subject had a highlighter, and note taking was so systematic in how it was highlighted.

I get ice cubes in my hot tea at Starbucks so I can drink the tea immediately instead of waiting 10 minutes and still burning off half of my tastebuds. Starbucks has somehow figured out how to make atomically hot water. I

I like to pick the longest line at the grocery store so I can read the gossip magazines while waiting.

    I HATE being tickled.

There are automatic hot water faucets you can get. Keith’s parents have one in their house. LOVE IT! No need to ever wait for water to boil…you just press the button. One of the days when we get new counter tops and a new sink we are going to have one put in. I say one of these days….definitely won’t be anytime soon.

    Love it! 🙂
I try to make patterns with numbers. Its usually with addresses and license plates. I try and find some kind of pattern, and I always add up the two smaller numbers to see if they equal the bigger one. I have no idea why.

I can’t take naps either…I actually hate taking naps, always makes me feel more groggy. Love the quirks…

When you get preggo, you’ll have to get over that sleeping situation, ugh! I am a stomach sleeper, too – and I think learning to sleep on my left side was about the hardest part of the whole 9 months!

I also hate naps because I hate waking up like a zombie in the middle of the day.

I like to straighten the salt/pepper shakers, ketchup, etc on restaurant tables. Jason laughs at me every time that I do it, but I can’t help it!

I really like the number 5 — I don’t know why. I like reading/seeing signs that have either 5, 10, 15, etc letters. And I like to imagine counting out the letters on my fingers. This probably makes no sense but I really don’t know how to describe it!

    I like this! A lot!

I don’t even own matching bras and panties. 🙂

    Love this post!

Ha ha, I giggled a little at some of the things on your list – only because I can totally relate to some of them. For me, I can’t fall asleep until all the closet doors are closed and the bathroom door. I guess I think it’ll keep the monsters in.

#10- Me tooooo!!!! 😀 If I’m doing my hair or something in the bathroom and somebody is talking to me I watch myself! Eeek, I’m so shallow! 😉 Loved this post- super fun!

I never wear matching bras & panties either! hehe
… I can’t sleep with my back facing the door, it freaks me out for some reason
… every once in a while when I eat a banana, i drizzle a little ketchup on it. It’s actually pretty good 🙂

  15. August 17, 2011 7:34 pm

I make up the words to songs too, it’s totally normal;)

  16. August 17, 2011 9:10 pm

oh kelly, you have a true gift of writing. Like this post, it is says so much and yet it wrapped up into one post. AWeSOME! I love the dirty coffee, haha. I think I am beoming more like you with that trick. And I am in shock about NFL ticket, what was keith thinking?!!

  17. August 17, 2011 10:02 pm

I take a 2-3 hour nap every weekend. Sometimes both days.

  18. August 18, 2011 3:00 pm

I WAS JUST thinking about the vanity of blogging. Its true isn’t it. I mean most of us write about things going on in OUR lives….like everyone should care what we do. But you know what, most of us do care about each other! Blogging is funny that way.

Oh, and who wears matching bra and underwear these days?!?! Please…
